Chapter 16

In this chapter we talked about free speech and what that means. Personally I think the fact that we are able to speak our mind and live in a country where we can do that is great. Yet I do believe that when it comes to some situations what is able to be put on the internet should be regulated. For example, people should not be able to post how to be anorexic, or how to make drugs should not be allowed on the internet. I understand that people have freedom of  speech and and I think that is a great thing but if someone's right to say what they want can hurt another person then what they are allowed to say should be regulated.

Another thing that I think should be regulated that we discussed in class, is that if what someone says is going to damage a person's career like in the "Red Scare". I don't think that it is right for a person to be able to destroy some one else's career. And like in the federal case where the journalist leaked the name of the agent I do believe that she should get in trouble for destroying that person's career.

Something  that I agree with that we talked about in class is Net Neutrality. I don't think that it is fair what so ever that some sites would load faster because of the amount of money that the creator of the site has.  There are so many original things that we would never see because the sites would never load. Like our blogs, it would take a long time for our sites to load because, well, we don't have any money to put into our sites. So much would be lost if this were to pass and would take so much away from the internet.

Chapter 11

Not being a media major I never really realized how much adverting there is on television. Taking this class really opened my eyes to how many different places ads are. Now when I watch a show on television I always see the product placement. One thing that we talked about in class was, should we have commercials on television that we pay for? Personally I don't really think it is that big of a deal, to me it is kind of one of those things that people complain about just to have something to complain about. For me commercials open up new products to me, and unless they are really excessive, I don't think people really notice them.

One thing that I do notice and that does bother me is product placement. I think that if we are watching a show, then there shouldn't be ads in the show, we are getting enough of those during the commercial break. I will say that some times it is cool to see something that you own in the show but most of the time it is just a beer bottle or clothing label, but other time it is so obvious. And my thought is, if I am watching your show I shouldn't be bombarded with ads in the show.

There is also now so many different ways the companies can advertise now. In earlier years it would just be magazines, newspapers, ratio, and television. Now people are on the internet for hours upon hours a day going to from website to website. The way that companies can reach people has increased so much. Companies are able to reach more people and are able to target a specific type of people. Also people who are accessing the internet are getting younger and younger, the the advertising world is opened up to a greater about of people, and a greater age range of people.

Chapter 10

In this chapter the authors talk about how books have been able to still be a prominent medium even with the creation of new media. Personally I know that many times I will choose to read books over watching television or surfing the Internet. For me, while growing up, books were a huge part of my life. Me and my sisters would always read before going to bed, and still do! Its hard for me to think that book aren't apart of some people's lives. For me it opened up a whole new world for me. It showed me lives of people who were completely different from me. I have very fond memories of my mom reading to me and my sisters when we were younger.

From talking about in class and from the text book the next step for books is going digital. People I know are getting the Kindle, and what ever else is out there to read books on. Personally I would never get anything like that. I love to have the actual book, being able to turn the pages. It does make sense to me that books would get there some day, and I guess if I was going on a trip or something and didn't want to bring 10 books that might be the only reason that I would consider something like that. I think I would even get an audio book, something that was read to me, rather than an electronic book.

When it comes to purchasing books I would much rather go to a book store rather than buying them online. There is just something about going to a book store that is so relaxing, and usually I don't know what I am looking for, so half the fun it figuring that out. When I was younger my family would go to the library almost every weekend. To me reading is such a great value that I have I hope that I can pass it on to my children when I have them.

Chapter 8

The newspaper although once a booming industry has over the years declined in popularity and sales. The newspaper used to be the only source for news and entertainment, which is not the case anymore. Basically everywhere you look there is media, online, on your phone, in your living room. There is less and less a need for the newspaper. As talked about in the book the sales of newspapers and steadily decreased over the past few years. There is no longer a real draw to the newspaper. There are easier and more convenient ways that we are able to obtain our information. I would have to say that I agree with the author when it comes to the fate of the newspaper. Our generation didn’t grow up reading it, the next generation most likely won’t grow up reading it, and I just don’t see how the newspaper could gain back its status.

In the 1800s was the start of yellow journalism, the idea that the newspaper didn’t just have to carry news, but could also talk about more scandalous things that people wanted to hear about. Today it is hard to find a newspaper that doesn’t have a story, or ever section, dedicated to the juicy gossip people what to hear about. And why, one might ask. Isn’t the point of the newspaper to get information about the world and what is going on in it? Yes, yet, the newspaper is a business just like any one business, therefore they want to produce what sells. And blood baths, celebrities, and scandals are what sell.

We talked about in class if it is possible to have journalism that is completely objective. Where someone can write about a topic and not insert their opinion into it. Personally I believe that it is very possible to do that. Granted, some topics may be harder than others, but it is something that is very doable. There is a time and a place for personal opinions, and sometimes it is in the newspaper, and sometimes it isn’t.

Chapter 6

Being some one who does not have cable when they are at home, when I come to school I am like a kid and a candy store. Cable has made it so easy to watch television. There, for the most part, is always something on. The ease of being able to sit down and flip on the television and be entertained is one of the things that we have grown accustomed to. When I am at home and only get the basic channels it is very say for me to turn off the television and go do something else. But here there is always the prospect of something being on. Cable opened the doors for a wide range a viewing opportunities.

The focus of not only viewers, but sponsors always, is shifting from broadcast channels to cable. One of the reasons cable is able to be as successful is because they offer so much more than the broadcast channels. The specific channels that are not avaliable on regular television is what makes cable so valuable. Channels like MTV and ESPN which are targeted at a specific audiences. This is what makes cable so valuable. Also premium channels like HBO are also a big incentive to getting cable.Cable has also made viewing television easier. With the On Demand channels you are able to choose movies right from your couch. You can send it to any television in the house and on some providers start over the show or movie. Another thing that has made cable much more easier is DVR. The ability to record shows. The newest thing that has come out is being able to set your DVR from your phone. The simplicity and benefits of cable seem to out weigh the fact that you have to pay for it.

Now the ability for cable to go wireless is another frontier that is being explored. Now that our society has become so high tech we are no longer satisfied with being able to watch television when we get home we have the need to take our television shows with us where ever we go. This new horizon that we have come across is just another thing that we can add to our media life. Now we can always ve connected to the shows we want.

Chapter 5

With the invention of the television there was a whole other world that people have never been exposed to, the ability to have a working television right in their house was something totally strange and exciting. Along with the creation of the television came experiences that people had never been able to have before. To sit at home and watch TV was something that was totally uncharted to them. Now it seems to be more of a necessity rather than a luxury. What TV was to them flying cars would be to us. It is amazing to see the way television has grown leaps and bounds over the decades. These days it is rare to find a household that has only one television. We have become addicted this media that has been placed in front of us.

With the scandal that was caused by the quiz-shows people, some for the first time, realized that television was not true and just. This caused an uproar of controversy. People believed that what they were seeing on television, more than any other medium. This caused Americans, and networks to question the kind of shows that are on television. People lost trust in what they were seeing.

In 2005 for the first time in history sitcoms were not rated in the Top 10. Now why is this, some one my ask. One explanation could be that we have just our grown it. Maybe we have been seeing the same thing over and over again and we have just gotten tired of it, we need a change. Another way of looking at it is that maybe our society has changed and therefore the shows need to go along with it. It is no longer the days of housewives (unless they are of the desperate nature). So maybe the times are a changin' and so does our television. I personally think that it is the latter. I think that our society has become a money, fame, materialistic frenzy. Our priorities have changed and with that we are not interested in the same things that we have been in the past.

Chapter 4

With the invention of the radio came the issue of regulating it. The Radio Act of 1912 required everyone who wanted to broadcast on the radio to have a license. Personally I think that making people who are going to be on radio have a license is a very smart thing to implement. Especially since having so many people in the radio would stop people from getting emergency notices to people who need to get them. Also I don't really think that people should be able to say whatever they want to say. I guess I came from a more sheltered household, but having a younger niece I would never want her to hear any of those words. I know that kids will hear them any way from their peers and what not, but they should not hear them in a way that makes it alright to say them.

When the radio became portable it reinvented what people thought media could do. Being able to take the radio almost anywhere what something people of the 1960s had never experienced. These days it is routine to have many portable devices with us. Right now I have my iPod, my cell phone, and my laptop. It makes me wonder what's to come. Will one day all of these things be one? We are well on our way already. Smart phones play music and let you surf the web while still allowing you to make calls. Making radios portable was just the tip of the iceberg.

As talked about in a previous post I am a huge consumer of internet radio. The idea that we are able to listen to radio on the internet for free and are able to choose what we listen to is, I think, one of the greatest ideas ever. As I write this I am listening to Pandora. Having free internet radio stations allows me to be exposed to music I would not hear other wise. Also if I had money for a satellite radio, and my car was equip for it (not sure '97 could take it) I would buy one. And more and more lately I have been wishing I could talk my internet radio with me other places, not just in the car, but on my iPod. I know that devices to offer this and maybe I am just to poor and low tech to have those things. But even having the radio online and been a nice luxury.
